Our Kaupapa

Te Huarahi: The Pathway of Faith + Justice

Te Huarahi Passionfest is a small grassroots festival for young adults chasing after Jesus and justice in Aotearoa. It’s about camping under the stars, worship and kōrero, music and art, shared kai and whanaungatanga.

We want to form a new generation of Jesus-followers who care deeply about people and creation. Alongside you will be families and older adults who’ve walked this path for decades — cheering you on and sharing the journey.

The vibe is Tents. Music. Karakia. Kids everywhere. Shared meals. Creative spaces. Big conversations. And yes, the legendary Saturday night barn dance.

Why Te Huarahi?
Because we’re on a journey together — learning to be kaitiaki of God’s world and companions to one another in the way of Jesus.

Our story

Passionfest ran in Waikanae for over 10 years. After a COVID pause, we’re back with a fresh name and kaupapa: Te Huarahi.

The new name points to the pathway we walk together — an Aotearoa-shaped journey of faith, justice, and kaitiakitanga. Passionfest stays in the name to honour the past, but Te Huarahi is where we’re headed.

Te Reo me ōna Tikanga

Ko ngā kaitiaki o te reo me ngā tikanga mō Te Huarahi: ko Matua Rangi Nicholson (Ngāti Raukawa), ko Courtney Menary (Ngāti Toa Rangatira), ko Jesse Coffey Elias (Te Ātiawa), me Micah Young (Te Ātiawa). Kei muri i a rātou te rōpū whakahaere me te whānau o Ngatiawa River Monastery nō ngā ahurea maha. He nui tō mātou aroha ki te reo me ōna tikanga, ā, e rapu ana mātou i ngā ara hou hei koropiko ki a Īhu i Aotearoa nei.

He kaupapa tēnei e pōwhiri ana i ngā iwi, i ngā ahurea katoa. Ahakoa tō taumata reo, nau mai, haere mai! Ka whakamāramatia ngā tikanga puta noa i te hui.

Mēnā kāore anō koe kia tae ki Ngatiawa:

  • Me tae tōmua ki te pōwhiri.

  • Tāne: mau tarau.

  • Wāhine: mau panekoti (kaua e mau tarau)

  • Kawea mai he koha iti mēnā ka taea.

Ka ārahina koe i te tukanga pōwhiri i tō taenga mai.

He taonga te reo Māori.

Māori language and culture at Te Huarahi Passionfest

Our tikanga kaitiaki for Te Huarahi are Matua Rangi Nicholson (Ngāti Raukawa), Courtney Menary (Ngāti Toa Rangatira), Jesse Coffey Elias (Te Ātiawa), and Micah Young (Te Ātiawa). They’re supported by the organising crew and the Ngatiawa River Monastery whānau from many cultures. We love te reo and tikanga and seek to worship Jesus in ways that make sense here in Aotearoa.

This festival welcomes all cultures. Whatever your level of te reo, you are welcome! Tikanga will be introduced and explained throughout the weekend.

If this is your first time at Ngatiawa:

  • Please arrive 15 minutes before the pōwhiri to be briefed by Matua Rangi.

  • Men: wear trousers and tidy clothing.

  • Women: wear a skirt or wrap.

  • Bring a small koha (gift/donation) if you can.

Te reo Māori is a treasure. We encourage its use throughout the festival. There will be workships in te reo (not to learn the language, but where another kaupapa is discussed in te reo), times of worship in the Tarore Chapel in te reo, and a rumaki (immersion) space where you can sit over coffee and speak only Māori with others.
